"At Km marker 48, south of Ensenada, turn off west
onto an unpaved graded road following the Rio Santo Tomás 29 Km (18
miles) west to the seaside fishing villages of La Bocana and Puerto Santo
Tomás, both right on the south side of Punta Santo Tomás. The Rio
Santo Tomás drains into the Pacific at La Bocana (The Mouth); during the
Dominican era, Puerto Santo Tomás served as a supply port for nearby Misión
Santo Tomás.

The scenic coastal topography along Punta Santo Tomas
and the coves to the south have attracted a small gringo settlement, but
for the most part you'll have the beach all to yourself. Camping is
free; you can rent rustic cabins at either village. The villagers
also rent fishing pangas.

The shore in front of La Bocana offers occassional
beach and reef breaks. Determined surfers can brave an un-graded
dirt road that runs south off the graded road from Mexico 1 - the turnoff
is approximately 20.5 km west of the highway - and straggles 11 km
southwest to Punta San José, where there are often good reef and point
breaks.
