Johnson's
Seamount, nine km southwest of Cabo San Quintin, is renown site for
underwater photography and spear-fishing. Sixteen km northwest of
Cabo San Quintin, Isla San Martin is surrounded by kelp beds, several rock
reefs, and underwater pinnacles. Roca Ben, five km south of the
island, rises within three meters of the surface, with immediate depths of
30 meters. Encrusted with hydrocoral formations, the rock is a habitat
for abundant abalone, scallops, lobsters, and other shellfish. Due
to cold-water upwellings, visibility ranges 15-25 meters (50-80 feet).
Although San Quintin has no
dive shop, a small, American-owned outfit called Neptune's, on the
road out to The Old Mill, offers guided dive trips. Diving
Charters, leads periodic dive trips to Isla San Martin and Johnson's
Seamount. The latter was named for a Diving Charters skipper who
pioneered diving in the area.
