HOW TO GET THERE
The State of Sonora is located in Northwestern Mexico. It is bordered by the United
States (State of Arizona) to the North; the State of Chihuahua to the East; the Gulf of
California, to the Southwest; the State of Sinaloa, to the Southeast; and the State of
Baja California to the Northwest. This attraction is located on the cost of Northwestern
Sonora, in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), approximately 522 kilometers from the State's
capital.
ORIGIN
Until 1927, Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) was just a small fishermen's town and it was
known as Punta de Piedra. The main species caught were totoaba and giant prawn, for which
the town is known throughout the country and southern United States. These crustaceans are
so well-known that a monument has been built in their honor.
DESCRIPTION
These beautiful beaches are classified as an important tourist attraction. They
stretch out for 100 kilometers. Their sand is fine textured and they are practically
untouched by human hand. A warm sun, attractive tidelands, boat rides and friendly
dolphins are only some of the wonders tourists can enjoy in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point).
Waves are soft and the ocean is clear. These beaches are ideal for water sports all
year-round, since the average temperature ranges from 31 C (91.8 F) in Summer, to 18 C
(64.4 F) in Winter. Its vegetation is rather desert-like, since thorny bushes and saguaro
cacti grow here. The region's fauna mainly consists in wild song and ornamental birds that
have adapted to this type of climate. During the high season, for instance during Easter
and Summer, its beaches are ideal for camping and water sports. On these beaches there are
also hotels which feature all types of fun recreational activities.
ACTIVITIES
Tourists can participate in different activities, from simply observing the landscape,
taking photographs, surfing, to exciting races on motorcycles and buggies, especially
equipped for racing on sand dunes, as well as water sports, such as scuba diving, fishing,
snorkeling, windsurfing, swimming and riding on water motorcycles.
