Geology

BAJA |
GEOLOGIC PROVINCES Shown below is a
simplified version of the Geologic Provinces map from The Magnificent Peninsula guidebook.
It will provide you with a overall view the the Baja peninsula's geologic features.
PENINSULAR RANGE PROVINCE (Shown in Green) -- The main mountain range is a giant batholith
sloping downward from east to west. The highest mountains are thus found along the
peninsula's eastern edge. The coastal areas are steep and rocky with occasional beaches.
BASIN AND RANGE PROVINCE (Shown in Red) -- This province contains largely level terrain
broken by steep north-south running mountain ranges. It looks like much of this same
province in the southwestern portion of the United State (Arizona, Nevada, etc).
CONTINENTAL BORDERLANDS PROVINCE (Shown in Yellow) -- This area is level or gently
rolling. The coastal areas consist of extensive stretches of sandy beach.
Many of Baja's geologic features are featured in
The Baja Highway - Geology & Biology
Field Guide.
